End of Year 1 Wrap Up.

Letter from the Chair.

A successful first year for ASSA

ASSA was formed in 2021 as the peak body for Australia’s seaweed industry with the aim to help scale up environmentally responsible commercial farming of seaweed to provide food, feed and bioproducts.

ASSA has 10 corporate members working together to drive the industry forward. These include the 10 major seaweed players in Australia: Australian Seaweed Institute, CH4 Global, FutureFeed, Sea Forest, Fremantle Seaweed, AusKelp, Pacific Bio, Tassal and Harvest Road. We also have 31 Affiliate Members from start-ups and supply chain partners keen to support the industry.

The big news is……we have secured the support of the new Federal Government who have committed $8 million over 2 years to ASSA. This funding will be invested in key areas identified with our Corporate Members across policy, capability building and information to help the industry grow. More information on this to come once we’ve got the details from the newly formed Government.

Looking ahead to the next 12 months, the ASSA Board will ramp up engagement with Government on policy needed to accelerate industry development. We will also increase engagement with Members to share knowledge and spark collaboration.

ASSA are sponsors of the upcoming International Seaweed Symposium in Hobart from 19th-24th Feb 2023. We will also be hosting a PitchFest event during this conference which will bring together investors and seaweed companies to increase the flow of capital into the sector. Our Members will receive a discount for registration and will be invited to ASSA events during the conference. We will email members with the discount code when registrations open (expected July) and we strongly encourage you to attend in person if you can. ISS 2023 – International Seaweed Symposium

I hope you agree that the first year has been a good one for the establishment of ASSA.  Thank you to all of those who have joined as members, and we look forward to welcoming you back in year 2 for an even more successful year.

Yours in Seaweed Solidarity,

Jo Kelly
Chair, ASSA.
